GMC Sierra 1500 Oil Type

To keep your new truck at peak performance, use 5W-30 synthetic oil. While the GMC Sierra 1500 can run on conventional oil, synthetic oil is the better choice. It costs more upfront than regular oil but lasts longer and keeps your engine cleaner thanks to chemical additives. It also thickens at a slower rate and can withstand extreme temperatures. Your engine will enjoy a “healthier working life” with full synthetic oil, which equals fewer maintenance issues and a higher resale value.

How Often to Change Oil in a Sierra 1500?

If you use conventional oil, you’ll need to schedule GMC Sierra 1500 oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Should you opt for full synthetic oil, you can wait 7,500 to 10,000 miles before you need a change. Consult your owner’s manual for oil change specifics and keep factors in mind that call for more frequent changes, such as:

  • How often you drive
  • Where you drive
  • Regional weather

How Do You Check the Oil in a GMC Sierra 1500?

To ensure an accurate reading, park your Sierra 1500 on level ground and turn the engine off. Wait about two hours, or until the engine is cold, to measure the oil level. If you do not have two hours, wait at least 15 minutes if your engine is warm. Locate the oil dipstick on your truck by referring to your owner’s manual, and remove it. Wipe oil from the dipstick, then place it back in its tube and wait a few seconds. Remove the component again to read the current oil level. The stick should feature “Min” and “Max” lines.

If the oil is below the “Max” line, it needs more of the auto fluid. Add oil and wait about 10 minutes before checking it again. If the level is not above the “Max” line, add more. Should you still encounter issues, contact our service team to check for a system leak.
